Oilers + Mavs on the brink, Boston sports and weekend wagers
UFC 303 Main event Switcheroo
The hype surrounding UFC 303 has been understandably massive so when Dana White made the surprise announcement that the main event has been switched from McGregor vs Chandler to Alex Pereira vs. Jiří Prochazka I think the collective L the fans are handing the UFC is justified. If it had always been Pereira Prochazka I don’t think the backlash would be this big but missing out on the already booked flights, hotels and other various things that go along with taking time to attend the UFC made the switch necessary. Connor is apparently nursing an injury and im skeptical at this point that we ever see the true Connor McGregor again.
The Most Ocho
While I don’t have anything that happened this week for our most Ocho sports moment I want to take you back to April when Palestinian football fans showed up to a match against their rivals with an actual Lion cub. Alex the Lion cub was born in the Zoo in Rafah but the owner was forced to sell the cubs in order to feed the other animals. Two of the cubs have been living with Saad Aldeen Al- Jamal and his six children in Southern Gaza. Demonstrating that watching football with a lion is less scary then everything else thats going on in Gaza fans took delight in the cub in a home team kit. Shabab Rafah and their Rivals El-Sadaka play in the Palestinian league.
Oh what a night
What a night Boston fans had on Wednesday. Name me another city who can fill 3 stadiums on the same night with only 1 team actually playing a home game… I’ll wait. The Celtics went up 3-0 in the NBA finals while Luka threw tantrum after tantrum. A packed TD garden looked on at the Jumbotron watching their Celtics go for glory on the road in Dallas. The Red Sox got a big win over one of the top teams in the NL with an 8-6 win against the Phillies. Propelled by a monster 5th inning, the Sox got their head back above water by inching back to .500 on the year. It was announced a few months ago when Tom Brady returned to Foxboro that on 6/12 he would be getting honored by having his jersey retired by the New England Patriots. Though my focus lies solely on banner 18 right now i kept checking twitter every few minutes to get updates on how the Brady ceremony went and god do I wish they picked a different day so it could have gotten the attention it deserved.
Drew Bledsoe was still in roast mode, Bill Burr killed it as always and Bill and Tom made it clear if there was ever any beef the stench of meat is long gone. Both gave the other their flowers and patriots nation wouldn’t let bill speak for two minutes because of the deafening standing ovation he received when he took the stage. You could tell it meant the world to him and though it’s becoming more frequent, anytime bill shows emotion it just gives the whole situation a different feel. If teleportation were possible i would’ve spent all of Wednesday night bunny hopping between stadiums and soaking in the ambiance of each. The greatest of all time accepted his patriots hall of fame jacket and was informed they’re building a 12 foot statue of him. 12 is obviously the right number but that feels like not enough. A twelve foot statue could barely capture the massive balls that G.O.A.T totes. The Red Sox got a much needed win and the Celtics are on the doorstep of etching their names into history. Blessed to be a Boston fan
It was always going to be Brooms
The Oilers and Mavericks are both on the brink and I have to say after a totally incredible NBA and NHL playoffs filled with unpredictable outcomes (for the most part) we are down to 2 3-0 series leads. Florida despite getting outplayed for long stretches have the best goaltender and that seems to be the only answer they needed (hello Playoff MVP) and The Celtics played poorly for 2 stretches of game 2 and 3 and both times overcame the poor play to stave off defeat. With a game to go in each series i’m sad to see both sports come to an end but i’m happy for the fans of the Florida Panthers and especially for Dubs; the Boston Celtics.
