Full Throttle
The Boston Red Sox are on the right track. We have an incredible farm system and we SHOULD be able to spend with the big boys like New York and L.A. If you remember a couple months back, I wrote a piece highlighting some of our top prospects and why the future in Boston is bright. Roman Anthony, Kyle Teel, Marcelo Mayer, and Braden Montgomery may all be in the major at some point this year. Pairing those up-and-comers with Raffy, Casas, the harbinger of hot mic’s Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, and others could prove for a very fruitful 2025 lineup. Wilyer Abreu, despite having a fantastic rookie season, doesn’t exactly fit into the equation and should be traded in a package for White Sox ace Garret Crochet. We’ve saved an ace from Chicago once and that ended in a World Series. I still miss you, Chris Sale.
The offseason last year was horrific, and the term “full throttle” will live rent free in my head for eternity. This year HAS to be better. This is a disgruntled fan-base that’s sick of ownership promising sweet nothings. They’re in a position to flip this thing around in just a few months and win some of those disgruntled fans back with a true dedication to winning. Our pitching staff should be the focus. I would love to get Eovaldi back, and I think a trade for a true number one (much like the Patriots) is not only a must but imminent. I think Breslow is making all the right moves to get this team where it needs to be again and that’s at the top of the AL East. Another opportunity has presented itself for Breslow to blow the lid off this thing and legitimately make an Astros level run over the next half decade.
Juan Soto is hitting the open market and the price tag is going to be astronomical. Offshore books have set the over/under at 600 million for a new mega-contract for the slugger. While there is a possibility of him betting on himself like he’s already done in the past, his youth allows him to potentially take a shorter term to try and get another shot at a mega contract in a few years. While I still think he ends up with either the Mets or the Yankees, the Red Sox could re-announce themselves as true threats with one big time dip into the money well. History shows this ownership group doesn’t want to do that. They really didn’t pony up for Shohei and they told Mookie to kick rocks so my confidence is understandably shaken. However the fact they had a three hour meeting with the guy yesterday with just about every money guy they have employed makes my eyebrows raise a little bit…
It could be a false flag- he could be using us to drive up that price tag just like Ohtani did with Toronto last year (sorry AC). We could just be doing this to maintain an image and “do our due diligence” but regardless of what’s happening our foot is in the door and this offseason could get VERY interesting VERY quickly.

Wemby-mania
First of all, let me say rest up Pop. Basketball loves you and I hope to see you back on the sidelines as soon as possible. Greg Popovich has been the coach of the Spurs since before I was born and I hope this isn’t his last season on the bench because the game wouldn’t be the same without him. When Victor Wembanyama was selected first overall by the Spurs, I knew there was no way this kid was going to be a bust. Wemby will be Pop’s last great gift to basketball and the domination may start to earlier than expected. “The Alien” just dropped his first career 50 point game in impressive fashion. The kid had 50 points on 8 threes in 32 min. There is absolutely no reason somebody who stands 7’3 and is expected to be a DPOY candidate for the next decade plus should be pulling up from 30 with confidence at 20 years old. Wemby was billed to be generational and that may be an understatement. He went to the perfect coach who’s already done this song and dance with David Robinson and Tim Duncan. There’s a chance he becomes absolutely unstoppable and we just saw the first flashes of it against Washington the other night. Please God, let him stay healthy. You too, Coach Popovich.
